OOC: as usual, Pogsley's use of deductive superstition is excellent!

Pogsley will squint for traps in the moonlight (ooc: success!) and then pop through the door.
By the light streaming through the cheap salvage-glass window, the Pogs ascertains there are no trap. He then released the hidden catch and slides the concealed panel up. Beyond is a narrow stone stair leading down into darkness.

At the bottom of the stair is a large room, obviously part of the basement. Dust covers the floor. There are a row of bunks built along one wall, and some old cots. Opposite the bunks stands a wooden rack loaded with weapons. Several tables, benches, and stools clog the center of the room. Pogsley smells the delicious scent of old potato from a bin in the corner.

There are no obvious exits. Pogs hears Homily's voice from above. "Be careful. It's dark. You should wait for Master Web'r. It's bad to umm... split up from the party."

OOC: As role-models go, the Tick ain't bad.

Web'r bows to the wall. "Thank you, Wall Spirits, for sharing your wisdom with us. I will make an offering of paint as soon as I may, and I hope that you will accept it."

He then turns to Homily. "And you, too, are wise, little one. Master Poglsley needs my strong arm by his side."

Still swaying a little, Web'r descends to join Pogsley....

OOC: what are you using for light? Pogsley can see in the dark. Web'r --and Homily, who's following him-- can't.

OOC: I thought that Web'r had the whole infravision thing going, as a reskinned half-orc. Doesn't do Homily any good, though, even if he does...so grab a candle, or -- if the room provides such -- a lantern.

OOC: oops.. you're right. Web'r has infravision.

Web'r waits for Homily to light a candle, then they proceed downstairs. To Web'r's keen failed merchant marine's eyes, the basement room looks like a makeshift barracks. The assortment of weapons --swords, maces, axes, even a few long polearms-- are old, but the blades are well-preserved with grease.

Searching around, you find another, less well-concealed door across from the one you entered from.

OOC: do you leave Benignus and Nameless (presumably) asleep upstairs?

"The Wall Spirits are generous tonight, Master Pogsley. Will you perform the Ritual of Opening? It seems rude to kick the door open when the spirits have been so kindly."

Pogsley bravely refrains from digging for delicious grave apples, so he can concentrate on sniffing and licking the cots to figure out how recently they were slept in and by what sort of sleeper.

OOC: it's Advanced Dungeons and Deviants!

Detective Pogsley puts his nose, and tongue, to the grindstone, so to speak, investigating the cots. Most of them smell and taste of mold, with the faintest hint of old sweat. One, however, has the much fresher evidence of use. And by "use", I mean baby-making.

Pogsley takes one last sniff, then moves onto the secret room within the secret room!

OOC: perfect!

The secret door has no lock. Pogsley's opens it and sees a large room (60 ft across) filled with what you'd expect in an inn's cellar; barrels, a cord of firewood, crates, old furniture, a rusty wheelbarrow, an ash pit in the middle of the wall, and a figure emerging from a hallway on the other side of the room. It's hard to make out details using infravsion. The only light source is Homily's flickering candle.

The figure jerks to a stop.

OOC: roll a d6.

Several seconds go by before the startled heat-signature across the cellar answers in a gruff, slurring, male voice. "I'm... looking for more ale. Hush up or you'll wake the innkeeper."

Homily tugs at Web'r's tunic. "Who are you talking to? I can't see. Sounds like he's getting cold." The girl scrunches her whole face up as she squints purposefully into the darkness.

While Web'r is talking to the stranger, Pogsley takes advantage of the darkness to blend into the shadows and sneak up behind the figure to get a better look.

Hide in Shadows: 06 = Success!

While Web'r is speaking and the little girl is squinting, Pogsley, darting between barrels and quiet as a cat, gets up to and behind the figure. He's tall compared to Posgley (but who isn't?), but short and stocky for a man. He's not carrying a light source. He doesn't have any obvious weapons. He seems startled. His right hand slips to his waist.

Behind the man is a short hallway. At the end are stairs leading up the inn's first floor.
