Homily keeps shouting taunts at the invisible man. Web'r feels the air shift slightly. Both of you hear footstep pad up the stairs. Someone's trying to be quiet again. Homily says, "The bad man's not here no more."

From the top of the stairs behind Pogsley a gruff voice is heard. "What's going on down there?". It's Elmo the ranger. Then an ugly sound floats down...

... like someone attempting to cry out through a slit throat.

Elmo's body tumbles down the stairs.

Web'r is struck with sudden inspiration. Running to the ash pit, he scoops up as much ash as he can hold....

...before sprinting to the stairs, leaping over Elmo's body in the process. He flings the ashes as hard as he can up the staircase, hoping to strike the killer.

Web'r quickly scoops ash from the pit, potentially starts a new Port fad --corpse-vaulting!-- and fills the stairwell and part of the kitchen with a cloud of soot. Homily trails after him, enthusiastically shouting "Murderer!" until she's shut up by a fit of coughing.

From somewhere about you hear Eli the Innkeeper yelling, "Elmo! Are we being robbed? Someone wake Beard! Old codger still has a spell or two!"

Pogsley hitches a ride, adding Goblin Chicken Fighting to Web'r's caveman Drunken Boxing. A coughing, soot-outlined figure stands in the kitchen at the top of the stairs. It tries to dash out the door into the common room.

Both arrows miss. Your ashy, hacking quarry exits the kitchen, vaults the bar, and makes for the inn's front door. Limned as he is in soot. you can make out a short sword in his right hand and a dagger in his left.

Eli the Innkeeper stands aghast at the other end of the common room.

Web'r lurches forward and makes a diving tackle, forgetting as he does that Master Pogsley is currently riding his shoulders.

OOC: Making two attack rolls, and two % rolls, just in case.... That's a 6 and a 19, with a 5% and a 20% respectively.

Yon sooty foe is surprised you're trying to bare-hand tackle an armed combatant. This surprise contributes to him missing with both sword and dagger as Web'r appraoches. However, he quickly regains his composure and dodges the tackle. Web'r and Pogsley go sprawling. The man elects not to counter against them. Instead, he runs out the door.
