Nameless tells him both of the wooden kite shields the half elves used were magical. Which also means they aren't fireproof, since one burnt quite nicely after Web'r soaked in the Greek fire, then hugged it wearing searing armor.

Once you get somewhere safe, and not all crime scene-like, Nameless can identify it.
