PostSubject: Lying to priests and interrogating cats   Lying to priests and interrogating cats Icon_minitimeSat Aug 14, 2010 11:54 pm

The victorious heroes flew on pigback into the Eladrin Cathedral and returned to them the golden goddess Lady Kommarel of the Thousand Dreamings. Before parting, Lady Kommarel gave Yatagan one more vision: A floating, three-headed, six-armed, purple god died as it was being worshiped by the Eladrin. Lady Kommarel entered the room one night, silent and unseen, and turned the dead god's remains into the egg.

The gnome attack was called off, the Petitioners were blamed, the church's security was inspected, and the heroes went home with 100,000 gold, less 15,250 which was collected by Exypnos Theokleftis, who then shattered the contract coin. The only catch: Parson Bedelia asked the crew to bring back the corpses of the dead Petitioners so that they could be questioned.

Upon returning home to plot their caper, Lizzy realized that Fagin's cat had given them the slip back at the Cathedral and became concerned that the cat was squealing on them, but it show up an hour later with a key in its mouth, which it gave to Fagin. Curiosity aroused, the gang went shopping for a Speak With Nature ritual, which they convinced Paetros to cast, granting them two questions.

One: What is the key for? The Egg chamber.
Two: Who does the cat work for? Z'roa.

Still not satisfied they cast it again, this time for three questions.

Three: Who is Z'roa? Fagin's intended.
Four: Why is Z'roa helping them? Z'roa isn't.
Five: Why is the cat helping them? The cat likes Fagin.

After their previous trip, Fagin decided the others were a liability to his lying ability, so decided to return to the cathedral alone. Ex-Petitioner Subtle suggested that her people would have taken the corpses and left magic traps in their place, so she paralyzed one of Fagin's legs temporarily. Finally, Fagin said that all pigs were liars, leading Paetros to slap in his the face and make the flying pigs disappear, so that when Fagin had to limp his way back to the Cathedral alone. Fortunately, Parson Bedelia seemed to buy Fagin's story, although she said she'd send some people to investigate, so the crew had to run out and magically make it look like someone had suspiciously cleaned up an abandoned warehouse in the Shambles.

Yatagan returned to Goblintown, which was on high alert, thanks to Brinjinn's warning. Yatagan told Big Hobb that the attack was no longer coming and Big Hobb reminded Yatagan of his promise to bring Bosslady Fixer back by the old temple so that her former priestess could see the goddess one last time.

On his way out, Yatagan saw Brinjinn who seems a bit unsure of what his place is in the world and who warned Yatagan that he might not be able to trust Prezenzo.

Prezenzo was asked by the crew if he could make a convincing duplicate of the alchemical engine/golden goddess and he said no. He seemed genuinely unsure if she could create a duplicate of herself, but that it was worth a try. To this end, Fagin said they could use the god bones.

And that's what you missed on in last week's episodes of The Lost City, the Golden Goddess, and the Waiting Egg....

Meanwhile, at stately Swine Manor...

After Yatagan returns from Goblintown he'll convene a meeting of the Purloin of Pork, the Church of Treasure's newly-formed gentleman thief and caper-artist wing. Over a Pernod and a slice of mouse pie, the Dragonborn catches the rest of them up.

"Goblintown is safe. The ward-detector is delivered and Prezenzo is hard at work on more prayer-foiling dolls. Good Brinjinn Hob warned me not to trust the deva, so we may want to prepare for a possible double-cross. Though I must say, for an Old Soul obsessed with ancient Dragonborn technology and a callous disregard for mortal life, Prezenzo seems like a trustworthy chap."

OOC: when will Prezenzo be done w/the new dolls?

"Gentleman, while we wait, we should set spies on the cathedral and the docks. It would not due for the Eladrin to ship Kommeral back to the Blessed Isle before we have the opportunity to steal her back."

"Mr. Fagin, any ideas of how we're going to bamboozle your future in-laws in Hell? And has anyone seen Mr. Artichoke? We have need of that most puissant planning which percolates through his shiny dome. "

OOC: So I guess the next thing on the group's agenda is to break into the eladrin cathedral using Prezenzo's dolls and steal lady Kommarel, while hopefully getting her to use the god bones to create a duplicate of herself? I'm checking because (depending on Steve's thoughts regarding an idea I suggested) there's a chance Artichoke might be unavoidably detained and unable to return before you guys carry out this plan.

OOC: we're definitely doing this. Kommeral told Yatagan "his" egg must hatch, so hatch it will!

Are you sure you don't want to play Artichoke-in-Hell, shil? We could use 1) strategy and 2) a straight man.

Pætros. Pætros fumes. "You!" he levels a shaking finger at Fagin, "Is apostate from nowforth. Will have letter branded on head, to being marking as such. Pigs is not for being liars, pigs is for being TRUTH, revealed. A pig has no deception in heart, only tasty flavor for those that are being liking such."

He pauses, considering. "Am not much liking hearts, myselves. Is not frying up nice and crispy.

"Am digressing. Will being penance for you, this is for being sworn!

"So!" Pætros brightens up. "Have registered for wedding, yet? Will being happy for performing ceremony, for receiving appropriate fee. Is bride being wearing white? If orthodox, will be dyed with blood, yes?"

Momentarily getting caught up in wedding fever, Yatagan interjects "I shall compose of poem in honor of the happy couple! One which will strike love and terror into the hearts of even the most hardened of Hell's denizens! A veritable paean to passion and perfidy!"

In a somewhat quieter voice the Dragonborn asks Fagin, "Can I be one your groomsmen?"

OOC: in addition to fireworks, apparently Yatagan really likes weddings.

OOC: the wedding poem will use Insight (23) to fathom the demonic ideal of love, Diplomacy (18), to flatter Fagin's highborn, Hell-bound in-laws, and Intimidate (26) to cow any being that has an objection to the union.

Well, not his best work. It's kinda insightful, not very flattering, but pretty scary.

Yatagan says, "On second thought, Fagin, how are you set for flatware?"

Of course!

Heh! I'm sure you're right, if his track record is anything to go by. Though I still think the cat might be the evil mastermind, with Fagin being his familiar.

I'm having a really hard time seeing Artichoke wanting to be involved (esp. directly) with the stuff the PCs are up to now. His primary motivation was always to create a mercenary band which is both efficient and reliable/trustworthy enough for the powers-that-be in the Port to want to use them. Which is why he was always very careful about making as few enemies as possible and avoiding real lawbreaking if he could avoid it. He's greedy but he's definitely not evil (which the current set of PCs quite firmly are, I think).

All of which makes it hard for me to have him involved, so I think it would be best to have him show up a few days later, only to find events well in motion. If he was there before the heist, the most, um, Artichoke-y thing(s) for him to do would not lead to fun for the other PCs, and I don't want to get in the way of you guys' fun. Plus if he does show up late, I think I can do some stuff with him which would work well for the long term development of the campaign. I won't say more, but let's just say the stuff you've all been up to has given me some deliciously RBDM-ly ideas Twisted Evil

If Steve's okay with what I suggested to him (no, I'm not telling!) then I'll have enough to keep me occupied next session, and if not, I might try running one of the more immoral former PCs (since Christabel and Penelope would never be involved with the current capers either). Perhaps Asarlai, or even one of the many NPCs you've got at the mansion now.

I don't know if I'd say that Pætros and Yatigan are actually evil, per se. I think that, rather, they're in the process of creating an entirely new system of pig-and-art based morality, one that less trained minds just can't quite grasp.

(Pætros' ethical system is more whim-based than anything, really. Both on my part, and on his. Pig is for being mercurial god. Does Treasure of Heavens contradict self? Is good, contradicting self. Is large, contains multitudes.)

Yeah, this would be out of Vox's comfort level as well, I suppose. Dexter, though...that hand's a son-of-a-bitch, let me tell you.

I really don't see them as evil at all. What's Pætros done, aside from be slightly unscrupulous in the pursuit of his religion? That's a virtue for Popes. Yatagan's occasional acts of extreme violence are tempered by his more frequent defense of the innocent, downtrodden and his pursuit of, ahem, "enlightenment" (there are many paths to god, some include sitting a stripper on top of an egg).

Also, for a paladin, he's remarkably non-judgmental.

What's the worst Yatagan's done? Rough up a barmaid? He's a large Dragonborn, and goblins are small and shifty, therefore his actions were justifiable. Besides, he learned his lesson, beating innocent people Stasi-style isn't terribly effective.

Yeah, but we decided early on to ignore it. I gather a lot of people playing 4e are doing that, which is much easier than in 3e because there's very little mechanical stuff in the rules which actually references alignment.

This is what happens when you leave a demonic con-man, swindler Pope, delusional paladin, and a dwarf willing the plunge the city into war in the name of universal health care in charge!

There are a few to choose from... also, for what it's worth, sorry for pushing the campaign in a direction that helped invalidate your character... you know that wasn't my intention.

Well, it's not like poor Artichoke had a choice in the matter.

Deal. Once Steve's done DMing...

Not a problem. I should have known that a character like Artichoke would sooner or later be a poor fit with this group. Maybe I should bring across my latest new 4e PC (from an online game with John). She's a minotaur who (incorrectly) believes that she's a werewolf. It's ... complicated.

Cool. I'm more than ready to hand over the reins and be a player again. Once we wrap up the tantalizing loose end of the trip to the Infernal Isles, it's all yours.

Sounds good. I've already got some things planned and that gives me more than enough time to come up with more stuff. Esp. since (as usual) I'll probably have a few different directions that things can go and it'll depend on what your PCs choose.

She is, but it's a Tomb of Horrors campaign, so I don't know how long she's going to be alive.

Yup. But right now I'm thinking of running one of the many existing (N)PCs at the mansion for the trip to the Infernal Isles. Possibly Asarlai, since the old geezer would figure he's going to die soon enough anyway, so he doesn't have much to lose in visiting the Isles. And after that I'll be DMing for a bit, so no PC needed.
