OOC: then I shall take a shot at failure -- Athletics: 22 -- nope... made it!

What's on the other side?

As Yatagan crosses the crevice, he shines his light down below and sees no sign of the bottom. Reaching the other side, he finds himself in an almost perfectly circular tunnel, carved out of solid rock, with similar grooved surface as in the wall on the other side. The only light source is Yatagan's crotch light. The tunnel continues on, sloping steadily downward as well as curving somewhat sharply to the left.

Once Yatagan is sure he's alone, he'll take firm hold of the rope, brace himself, trying to dig a heel into one of the grooves, and give the all-clear.

OOC: I presume we can all take 10 here, in which case Penelope, Sappho, Paetros and Artichoke should all be able to make it.

OOC: D'oh! I completely forgot about Taking 10...

Once the others are safely across, Yatagan will advance down the corridor until it bends left, then peer around, axe and shield in hand.

Yes, things are relatively calm at the moment, so taking ten is fine.

Not to worry. It's a statistical fact that 90% of the players in 90% of D&D groups never remember to take 10. Or something.

OOC: Completely in character for Yatagan!

The dark tunnel curves downward and around to the left for about sixty feet, then splits in two. One side continues curving to the left. The other curves off sharply to the right and begins sloping downward more dramatically. The path on the right will be considered difficult terrain because of the sharp angle of the slope.

When the group comes to the divergence in the tunnel, Artichoke turns to Penelope and asks, "Any chance you might be able to work out if anyone passed through these recently?"

OOC: Artichoke will use Aid Another (successfully), which gets Penelope a 25 in Perception to find tracks. If Yatagan and Paetros can also help, that might bump her up to a 27 or 29.

OOC: Untrained Perception check to help Penelope: 17 -- so she gets another +2 as Yatagan points to a revealing spot on the ground.

"Ghost-brain" inquires Yatagan, "Which way did you go?"

Cool. I checked and Paetros has a +10, so he should be able to help automatically, getting Penelope up to 29.

Fortunately there's a fair amount of rock dust on the ground and Penelope finds footprints going both ways.

The footprints to the right indicate that the tunnel has been heavily and recently traveled.

The footprints to the left seem older, however, as she's studying them, she hears the sound of movement echoing from that direction. The sound seems to be moving closer and then farther away, closer and then farther away.

Once Penelope explains what she detected, Artichoke says, "I suggest we try the more heavily traveled tunnel first. Whatever the source of the sound in the left tunnel, it'll probably still be there when we return."

OOC: Do the footprints lead down the tunnel(s) and back this way? Or are they unidirectional?

"Agreed. We'll investigate the left tunnel --and that oh so inviting door-- on the way out. If something lurks down the left tunnel, perhaps we can coax it up here. I shouldn't like to fight on that incline in this armor."

Yatagan head down the right-hand tunnel, shedding holy light from his codpiece.

The footprints go both ways.

Actually, it's the right-hand tunnel that's the steep one.

Mallus wrote:

The tunnel to the right continues downward, curving sharply to the right as it descends into the earth, like a corkscrew. After about two hundred feet, you see a light around the bend. The tunnel once again reaches a wooden plank that crosses a crevice.

After carefully crossing the plank, you emerge into a sort of of brick corridor, lit by the same glowing green panels that you saw earlier. At the left end of the brick corridor, you see a slick silver door with two handles, virtually identical to the one you saw up above. At the right end, are a set of wooden double doors. And straight ahead of you, is another circular hole in the wall with a wooden plank, crossing into darkness.

Penelope sees signs of a lot activity, both passing between the wooden planks and into the double doors.

Yatagan crosses the green-lit corridor and shines a light into the hole, then he examines the double doors and the metal door, without touching either of them. He'll also look at the walls and floor for signs of mortal combat, ie blood, scorch marks, etc.

The crevice crossed by the next hole is greater than the previous ones you've crossed. Your light can't see the far end.

Nothing particular stands out about the shiny metal door. The double doors seem sturdy.

No sign of mortal combat at this spot.

Yatagan is momentarily distracted by the shininess of the metal door. He lifts a gauntleted claw towards it, thinks the better of it, then tries to open the more mundane double doors.

OOC: I'm thinking that the opening of that door should probably lead us to the next live session of play. BECAUSE IT'S FULL OF MURDER!!!!!

This would be a good time, I guess for Artichoke and Penelope to bow out and hopefully Lizzy and Fagin to rejoin Yatagan and the Pope.

Pætros, who has been walking along muttering to himself, clears his throat.

"Is being time," he says grandly, "To being calling on god. Glorious Treasure of Heavens is bring bored, probably, and is wishing to help."

OOC: Cast the Hand of Fate ritual, or perhaps Pig of Fate. Will ask one question, "Which door is we should be for going through," and assume that the other two questions are Signs that we need a change of personnel. Maybe "Which is to be dying if are going through shiny metal door?"

Good idea. One thing you could do is have Artichoke and Penelope "present" but off-camera, fighting other NPCs if a fight occurs, so you can avail of them as NPCs (esp. Artichoke's healing) as needed, but that's your call.

A phantom pig appears at the Pontiff's feet. It scrambles over to the double doors and sniffs and scratches at the floor with its feet, then it scrambles over to the metal door and sniffs away at that for a while, then runs back to the double doors and nods her nose at them.

The phantom pig looks at Artichoke and Penelope with sad eyes.
