Killian Root, former paramour of Lady Dahlia Dandy, now lord and mayor of a strange little town in the heart of the Clutch shows you to the rooms he has prepared on the bottom floor of the west wing of his ramshackle country house. "You'll have to forgive the decor" he says, gesturing to the many paintings depicting idyllic and fashion-free rural living. "In almost a year here I've managed to make the master bedroom and my study, which you seem to have materialized inside, livable. One day I'll fix the rest of the house. But there's so little time... feel free to ring for the servants".

With that he leaves you.

Outside, the sun has begun to set. Lanterns are being lit on the east side of town, where the newcomers live. The other end of Vine remains dark.

That night, as they slept, Gepetto Jack Fagin has a vision:

Now it came to pass in my sixtieth year, as I was among the lunatics in the town of Vine, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of Treasure.
The word of the GOLD came expressly unto Fagin the Jew, the Gepetto Jack of the Port, and the hand of the GOLD was there upon him.
And I looked, and behold, a whirlwind came out of the interior, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the color of amber, out of the midst of the fire.
And out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a large humanoid of indeterminate gender.
And everyone had four faces, and every one had four wings.
And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the cloven hoof of a pig’s foot; and they sparkled like the color of burnished gold.
Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward.
As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a large humanoid of indeterminate gender, and the face of a dog, on the right side: and they four had the face of an armadillo on the left side; they four also had the face of a weasel.
As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like molten gold afire, and like the appearance of lamps shining on gold: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning of molten silver.
I beheld four floating discs upon the earth, by each of the living creatures, with his/her four faces.
The appearance of the floating discs was like undo the color of valuable stolen gemstones; and their appearance was as if it were a platinum piece in the middle of a gold piece, like four wheels made of treasure.
And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.
And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great and terrible mucking about in filth, as the voice of Treasure, as the noise of a host: when they stood, they let down their wings.
And amid and above the four wheels, above the firmament, was the likeness of a sapphire pig cart: and upon the likeness of the cart was the likeness as the appearance of a mighty swine above upon it.
And I saw as the color of gold and platinum, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of His tenderloin even upward, and from the appearance of His tenderloin even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about.
This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the GOLD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of Treasure that spake.

Meanwhile...

Places of interest include the graveyard on the southern hill, the vineyard behind the estate, the migrant worker housing, the town square, the smithy, the abandoned-looking houses, and the boarded-up houses (am I forgetting anything?).

"The graveyard," Vox says to the others, "Shall be my first goal. See if there are any fresh graves, do a bit of digging, and ask a few questions of whoever I happen to uncover. I won't object to company, but if any of you have other plans?" He shrugs. "Well, let's hear them."

Thanks. I've been reading a couple different translations of the bible recently, and some books about it, and giving Fagin a prophetic vision seemed like a good way to cement him into the Church of Treasure. I really like the GOLD too. While reading the King James, it occurred to me that LORD looked an awful lot like GOLD, which also looks like God. GOLD is the god of his fathers, naturally.* Gepetto Jack would spell it G-LD, of course.

* (if Jews believed in hell, I would be going there.)

Gepetto Jack takes a swig from a silver flask he produces seemingly from nowhere. "Before risking our skins with dead bodies and monomaniacally converted farmers, I want to take a listen to what the wind has to say. It'll only take me half an hour to conjure up the airy spirits of this place.

OOC: He uses the Seek Rumor ritual, which uses his Arcana check to gain information as if it were Streetwise (with a +5 on the streetwise DC).

That's a 33 Arcana, which is equivalent to a 28 Streetwise.

Gepetto spends half an hour communing with a minor Principality of the air, a trifling spirit, bastard-kin to the whirlwind and a louche gossip to boot. It tells Gepetto three things it's heard...

... the vineyard is home to a great Power... from the both East and West at once.

... this land is a land of milk and honey. The milk flows from sleeping cattle and the honey drips from the stingers of the waking.

... a green silence has lease o'er the fields. Except amongst the dark peoples, who whisper against their hosts and fear them.

OOC: moving on...

After Gepetto finishes speaking to the air, Vox (and who decides to go with him) carefully lights off the graveyard on the southern hill. Skirting the town square, even the least observant among you note the number of abandoned-looking buildings here, which give way to stately farm houses which are deliberately boarded-up. Behind these are a cluster of large barns near a copse of saplings. Vox can make out what appear to be sentries in front of the barns. No one else is about in this part of Vine. In fact, the only signs of habitation come from the east side town where the migrant workers live.

The graveyard sits on a low hill identical to one that holds the estate and vineyard. It's adorned with simple lopped-off crosses. They're design is similar to holy symbol the mayor of Choir wore; the sign of Mother Oak. Ignoring the crosses, Vox busies himself examining the serious earth.

To his trained and partially amortal eyes, it's a damned strange sight. There are no lingering dead about on the Other Side. Nor are there fresh graves. According to the grave markers, the last body was interred here a little more than a year ago. Only a scant few of the more durable offerings to the dearly departed remain; arms and ornaments lefty rusting in the rich loamy soil.

Vox stands, wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from a grave, he notices someone watching them. A fat shadow peering out from the corner of a building that could only be Jumbo.

Yes. That's not at all vague or enigmatic.

(I just typo'd that as "enigmantic", which works even better! "mantes" being the Greek word for seer or diviner, the root of the "mancy" in necromancy and oneiromancy.)

Vox raises an eyebrow. "Ah, Jumbo!" he calls. "You'll be delighted to hear that your graveyard has indeed passed inspection; first-rate bit of internment here, I must say."

He strides over to the big man, leaping nimbly over headstones. 'And this must," he continues as he draws closer, "Be a very fortunate town indeed, to have seen so few deaths over the recent months. Let me shake your hand, my good fellow!"

As the bureaucrat holds out his hand, another one leaps silently from the ground, nimbly scales the big man's leg, and makes a quick and furtive search for keys....

(OOC: Bluff: 25. And rolled this elsewhere, since I forgot the first time -- Thievery, via Dexter: 29.

Jumbo seems surprised by Vox's rapid advance. For a moment it seems she's going to run. Instead, she stands her ground.

OOC: Jumbo is a woman.

Quote :

Jumbo doesn't extend her hand, which is like bouquet of plump breakfast sausages. Her skin is cool the touch and the flesh unexpectedly firm.

Quote :

Jumbo has no response to Vox's macabcre yet smoothly delivered compliment. She starts to speak. Her mouth hangs open for a few second before words come out. "You should go back to the manor house". Vox hears the distinct rattle of keys coming from somewhere inside Jumbo's apron-like smock, but the plump and apparently somewhat slow woman doesn't seem to notice.

Soon Vox feels the comforting patter of five disembodied fingers running up the back of his leg. Dexter deposits a heavy set of keys in his greatcoat's interior pocket.

Well. *Ahem*

Vox, having realized his error, knows better than to acknowledge it. Instead he bulls on....

"Indeed, indeed, yes. Back to the manor house it is, then. Perhaps I could have a tour of the village on the morrow; much to see, such a lovely place!" He natters on as he walks, hoping to use his brisk strides to outpace Jumbo; once he's out of sight, he'll vanish into the shadows.

Gepetto Jack will start taking a look around the manor. To look for... clues. Yes, for clues. Clues. Right.

OOC: John, I was looking at familiars for Gepetto Jack, and one of the ones that made the most sense, mechanically and flavor-wise, was the disembodied hand. I don't want to step on Vox's schtick though. Would you be okay with it if I made the pneumatic hand on Gepetto Jack's clockwork arm detachable?

Edit: Apparently Fagin accidentally stepped on a cat. Stealth 16.

At the bottom of the graveyard hill Mr. Cadaveris nods to Jumbo before walking back in the direction of the manor house. Christabel follows. Vox rounds and abandoned house and proceeds to slip out of sight.

Christabel --trusts? hopes? prays? doubts?-- the Bureaucracy agent is remaining close by.

Unseen among the shadows, Vox spies Jumbo ahead of him somehow. She's half-hidden behind an ivy-draped well, watching Christabel intently. Vox also sees a handful of figures emerge from a boarded-up house. Another house blocks them from Christabel's view, but she's walking towards them. Vox also feels a faint burning itch all along his exposed skin, similar to the irritation he feels when strolling through a garden on a warm sunny day.

Christabel sees nothing. But she too feels something in the air. A scent of the endless open grasslands of the Interior.

Gepetto Jack leaves Roxy to her beauty sleep and sets out to explore the manor. For clues.

In the room you crossed over from the Other Side, Killian Root's study, Gepetto Jack notices a small wooden chest with a minor magical aura that he somehow missed on arrival. Growing excited that it might contain valuable... clues... he doesn't notice a slight bunching of the expensive Fae-woven carpet, snags his foot, and tumbles onto the floor.

The door opens. Magnolia walks in, holding a lantern shedding an even green light. There appear to be several more servants behind her.

__________________________________________________________________________________

Roxy lays her gargantuan head down on a high thread count pillow and drifts off to land of glamorous and oversize dreams...

... only to be awoken by her drag queen-sense tingling. She open her heavy and heavily made-up eyes in time to see six half a dozen dark figures emerge from the wall. They surround her bed. At first they looked like shadows, but in moment their features resolve into young country women in homespun shifts...

... simple country women that can walk through walls, that is. Each raises her left arm.
