Odanais just sits on the bar, his back to the wall, drinking a glass of rum and taking in the pig priest's theatrical method of interrogation and Lizzy's growing fury. His free hand wanders to the scars on his chest and thighs from the magisterial torturers back in his own world. He notices suddenly that he is biting into the rim of the glass and sets it down.

For a moment Scorn says nothing. It's hard to say what effect this line of inquiry is having on her. On the one hand, she's accustomed to terrifying threats from the Beyond. On the other, she's painfully aware of their consequences. And she's not used to being on the receiving end.

OOC: Insight 14.

Petitioner Scorn shudders. She says softly.

"Subtle didn't tell us anything specific. But she did boast. Drop hints. Her name was more than a little ironic, you understand. I'm really don't know if she knew for certain but she said only a lord could pay us so well. Not just a lord, a Magistrate."

She pauses.

"On the morning before the job, we went to scout out the drop site. I was hiding on a roof top and I saw an Eladrin standing with some Bailiffs. For my vantage I could see he was watching Subtle. He had a..."

Subtle goes quiet. Appearing behind the chair she's tied to is a tall, well-dressed man covered in bony spines, wearing a top hat several decades out of fashion. The keener-eyed among you note that he seemed to have walked straight through the wall. It's hard to tell. He moved in the blink of an eye.

"Pardon my intrusion. I'm Gladmarrow. This will only take a moment."

"I'm sorry" shrieks Scorn. "I didn't... I don't... know..."

"Of course not, dear". Gladmarrow plunges a bony finger into Scorn's back and she goes limp.

Odanais leaps nimbly to his feet, fixes his gaze on the intruder, and hurls the full fury of his own angst and painful memories at the creature.

------------------------

Initiative: 20

Dazzling Ray (Will): 13.
Damage: 31 psychic/poison if that hits.
15 psychic/poison if it misses.
Regardless, since the roll was even, target now takes -4 to hit (save ends)

OOC: Gladmarrow's initiative - 31. Let's see if anyone beats that before I describe what happens next.

Pætros is, for a change, the one taken aback. "Is being rude!" he bleats. "Petitioner is not for killing yet!"

OOC: Initiative is 26

OOC: oops, none of you can beat a 31 Init... moving on.

"That isn't for you to decide, sir" says Gladmarrow pleasantly. He smiles, exposing a of collection perfectly white human teeth. They are all different sizes. A few are baby teeth. Apparently they were collected from several different humans. He then licks his lips with a tongue that resembles a flexible bone spur.

Petitioner Scorn's face starts to sag and lose definition. Her body tips forward; a half-full sack of grain bound in ropes. Whatever Gladmarrow did liquefied her bones. There is a mercifully brief sucking sound and you notice a new bone growth begin to protrude out of Gladmarrow's collar.

As he notices a distraught-looking Odanais prepare to cast at him, he draws in a deep breath, which seems to pull the will to act from all of you. "Your anguish is delectable, young man. Truly top-notch" says Gladmarrow to the motionless Odanais.

Gladmarrow takes off his top hat, revealing an impossible dense crown of spikes. "Good day, sirs". With that, he steps across the room and back through the wall.

OOC: you take no damage, but are Stunned for 1 round and take a -2 on any attack made against Gladmarrow, saves ends.

Futile though it may be, Odanais bolts out the door to try and follow him.

------------

OOC: Unless, of course, I can't do that while stunned.

Save: Made

In a few seconds you recover your senses. Odanais rushes out onto Blackguard Street, only to find the usual crowds. Nothing resembling Gladmarrow can be seen.

Inside, Petitioner Scorn is still dead.

OOC: Now what?

Paetros rages, in fine form, stalking about waving his arms as he yells curses and imprecations in his barbarous tongue. Even the spirit-pig, for the first time since its initial manifestation, cowers away from him.

"Is not to be borne," he concludes savagely, "To be defied in very house of Pig-God! Unthinkable! Bone drinker is to be subject of Glorious Treasure of the Heaven's very first jihad! Will be very sorry, then be very dead! Very very dead!"

He whirls about, waving his staff. "Am going to Bardo, will find petioner's spirit, beat answers out of her!"

Now that more proper accommodations have been found for the Glorious Treasure of Heaven, Vox is more willing to take his meals with League. Also, they are free. As is the health care. Lizzie's seen to that. So later this evening when Vox returns for dinner you impress him into service communing with the dead.

The ritual is brief and macabre, the way Vox likes them. When he's done he shakes his head. "I can't locate her spirit it. The soul hasn't crossed over in the usual way. It's gone."

He considers for a minute or so. "I could make inquiries with the Eternal Bureaucracy, but I'd rather not. Didn't you kill someone else? With more conventional means? It would be a simple matter to go over to the Other Side and find her."

"Indeed," says Odanais, "a petitioner named Subtle."

Odanais describes her and her death to Vox as best he can. "Do you think you could find her?"

OOC: Sorry about the lack of recent posting. I've been busy with grading and unfortunately the site didn't send me any emails about updates, so I forgot to check.

And a question - how much do the PCs know about Gladmarrow?

IC: Artichoke, having sat back to watch Paetros at work, is far too surprised to respond in time before Gladmarrow enters, slays and is gone. He doesn't run after the killer, but instead, checks on the body and its condition. This just got very interesting. Damn!

Once Vox checks on the condition of the deceased's less physical remains...

"I'm still an agent of the Bureaucracy... at least the last time I checked. Never mind that, if she's on the Other Side, I can find her" says Vox.

You know he's something of a legendary figure in the Port. He's said to be tall, covered in bony spikes, and have to do with the Petitioners. You can now corroborate all of this.

Some people think he works for the Petitioners. Some think he's their god. After a quick consultation with Asarlai after he returns from a full day spent chatting with his elderly peers at the barbershop and hexing various unsuspecting children who were being altogether too loud, you conclude that Gladmarrow is one of, if the not only, power from Beyond-the-Sea the Petitioners swear pacts with.

"Given the way he just appeared as Scorn started to spill the beans, I'd say he either had a Pact with her, or he's omniscient and probably omnipotent. One or the other" says the surly old warlock.

"Since the whole purpose of trip is to do something I'm sworn not to do, in other words, 'harass the waiting dead for non-Bureaucracy business', I'm guessing you better come along" says Vox.

He adds, "Should be interesting to see if he --Vox hooks a thumb at Odanais-- has a thing for undead too".

Paetros, who still seems to be sulking a bit, lights at this. "Is good. Can bring word of Pig-God to dead, as well. Tend to be easy sell, have nothing else doing."

The Porcophant heads off in search of his formal robes, calling back over his shoulder, "Will also make good addition to gospel."

"Oh joy," grunts Artichoke. "Just what we want!" He sighs. "On the bright side, he didn't try to kill us." Then he frowns. "Maybe he just didn't think we were a threat."

"Sounds good to me. Well, the first part. Any preference for whether we go today or wait till tomorrow? You're the specialist here, so it's your call. Also, I'd like to stop at that vampire bloodseller's place on the way to the Hereafter. I want to see if he knows anything about that vampire queen whose spirit was supposedly in the mask."

Lizzy just stands there mouth open, staring as this Marrow fellow does his thing. When he leaves, Lizzy wakes as if from a dream. "Fucking wizard fucking fucks!" he shouts. "Fucking dead motherfuckers! I'm gonna kill these fucking fucks." He starts smashing furniture. "Fucking come in here. In our own fucking house. Nobody does that. NOBODY!"
