"Mr. Dare said something about Hidimba's late wife's spirit being missing" says Yatagan offhandedly as he tries to hide the fact he's putting a hand axe back in it's sling. "Perhaps we should investigate the big black heart overhead before we make our exit."

"Perhaps." Artichoke studies the heart minutely for a few moments (OOC: Perception 23, Arcana 24) and then turns to Odanais. "Can you make something of this?"

Quote :
The other shows the outside of the Hall of Injustice, looking even more shabby than normal. A figure is using whitewash to paint something on the wall -- "To Hell with the False Pig! All praise to Shahrbaraz, the true swine!" -- before running off out of sight.

OOC: Has Artichoke ever heard of this Shahrbaraz? Got a 20 in Streetwise and a 19 in Religion, in case it helps.

Quote :
Yatagan breaks out a sunrod, affixes to his shield by means of wax, then proceeds a few steps down the stairs (obviously while looking for traps...). He beckons to Lizzie.

Quote :
Lizzie follows Yatagan down the stairs, axe ready.

Artichoke waits for the others to proceed down the stairs, before following, letting Christabel bring up the rear.

OOC: Rolled Perception (31) and Religion (21) for Christabel too, since Amber's busy right now, in case it helps.

It takes a moment to notice that, however, as the eye is first seized by a thick chain of black metal hangs from the doomed ceiling high overhead, and dangling at the end of it is a heart, carved from stone, that's roughly the size of Yatigan.

How far above us is the heart hanging?

"Indeed," says Odanais. "In the world I come from, there isn't nearly such fierce competition in the art of pig deification."

Arcana check (for clues about the heart): 19

Streetwise check (for rumors about Shahrbaraz): 31

Memories, foretellings...time is an illusion, right?

Even with those rolls...no, not a thing. Well, one thing -- the name would translate into "The Boar of the City" in one of the archaic dialects of Draconic.

The top of the heart is just above eye level; it's base is about 6 inches above the floor. In Odanais' expert opinion, it's a metaphoric depiction of exactly what it appears to be -- the old man's heart, or perhaps his life-force. A closer examination reveals a network of fine cracks running across the surface...it still seems quite solid, but a good hard impact at the right place might just cause it to crumble.

Odanais, as though responding to some otherwise unheard voice, suddenly drops to one knee and removes his pack. As he slips it open, a tiny, furry head pokes out and looks around.

"Hello, Zappa," he says, putting out his hand for the creature to crawl on. "How's my girl?"

The weasel, light brown in color, with white patches around her eyes and a white streak running down her belly, makes a long series of chittering sounds, which Odanais listens to patiently, before responding in kind, then adding in human speech, "well, if you insist."

Odanais stands back up, holding Zappa aloft. He kisses her on the top of her head. Slowly, the weasel begins to levitate through the air up to the top of the heart. Once near the top, she hops onto the heart and begins to crawl around its surface, looking for any markings, openings, or other such excitement.

Oh, lords. "Odanais - are you sure your little friend isn't going to do something that we might regret?"

"We are explorers in an unbelievable country" Yatagan says to Artichoke. "Should we not do unbelievable things?"

"Perhaps one of the evil spirits has nested in Mr. Hidimba's heart. Not entirely out of the question, seeing as he's a Goetic from the World Before. If this is so, we should drive it out!"

There are, as it happens, openings at the top of the heart, precisely where the arteries would attach. Before Zappa can eel her way into any of these, however, she feels the heart beginning to vibrate -- an observation that she relays to Odanais.

"Apparently there's going to be no end of evil spirits here, so unless we have any evidence - which we don't - of that, I recommend we stop poking the poor tiefling's heart. Really!"

"How are we to find said evidence without poking around?" asks Yatagan innocently. "Besides, we're traipsing around the palace of his soul fully arrayed for war, at his request. This would indicate Mr. Hidimba's insides can withstand some degree of poking."

Satisfied that he won the point, the paladin proceeds down the stairs, stopping when he's about the lose sight of the room above.

Odanais listens to Zappa's excited squeaks and chitters, then nods his head and holds out his hands. The tiny weasel dives off off of the trembling heart and is caught in mid-air by an unseen hand that lowers her gently down into the waiting hands of Odanais.

"She says she found some neat holes she could climb around in," he explains to the others, "but she got annoyed when it started vibrating and decided to put off further exploration until it falls asleep. She says it will be less ticklish then."

The heart vibration is now visible, and is accompanied by a low rumbing noise that is not in any way ominous.

Yatigan quickly loses sight of the room above; the spiral of the stairs is very tight, and after proceeding about 20 feet the doorway is no longer visible. But there's an oddly soothing rumbling noise echoing along the stairs, at least.

Odanais decides that now would be a marvelous time to head down the stairs, yelling ahead to the others, "There's ever so slight of a chance that my weasel just triggered some sort of self-destruct mechanism in the building. In the event of our deaths, she wants everyone to know that she regrets nothing!"

Artichoke, last as always, barely makes it onto the stairs before there's a tremendous boom, and the ground shudders as though in the throes of an earthquake. The rumbling sound continues, but begins slowly to fade.

Artichoke acquires several spectacular bruises on his way down the stairs, before he manages to arrest his fall.

Depending on who you ask, it takes either a few minutes to find the bottom of the stairwell, or several hours. Clearly, this place is going to be tremendously annoying.

Either way, it ends at another arched doorway, which opens onto an arched stone bridge.

Standing in the doorway, it appears as though the bridge extends a good 50 to 60 feet before it reaches a dimly visible garden. Beyond that extends another bridge, which leads to a large and somewhat familiar, if a little blurry, mansion.

Surrounding the bridges, the garden, the mansion...and the area where the party stands, which is now revealed to be the base of a tall tower? Nothing but emptiness.

One might wonder how this is all visible, with no apparent sources of light beyond some inadequate torches than line each bridge....

"I'm not sure how much it'll help here," says Artichoke, but he tosses Yatagan a coil of rope. "Tie yourself on to one end," he suggests and then stands there holding the other end while the dragonborn steps onto the bridge, feeling his bruises a little grumpily.
