The Egg, and Everything After Empty
PostSubject: The Egg, and Everything After   The Egg, and Everything After Icon_minitimeSun Nov 20, 2011 3:38 pm

A crowd gathers as the creature swims toward the shore. When it first hatched it was less than a man's arm span long. By the time it reaches the village it's a long as a rich man's barn. It has the body of caterpillar, the legs of a dozen tiny gazelle, the tail of a normal sized lion, and the head of a dragon. No, make that a "Dragonborn". In fact, it bears more than a slight resemblance to the head on the statures of Ivorium.

Most of the villagers prostrate themselves before it, without getting too close. The others retreat back into their houses, hands making warding signs or quick rude gestures. The mayor, Yaekob, two well-dressed men, and a few men-at-arms, stand at the water's edge, arguing. Even at this distance, it's obvious Yaekob is furious.

The creature, call it the Green Bride, or Ashura, as its daughters named her, makes a giant caterpillar-line for the copse of trees behind the village where her previous incarnation has her shrine. Elmo, the not actually stupid ranger from the Borderlands, trails after her, at what might be a safe distance.

When Ashura reaches the tress, her body flashes with a thousand shades of light, which leave a green afterimage in all watching eyes. The kneeling crowd lets out a exultant cry. Mayor Yeakob, however, and his two companions, leap backward into the lake at the sound. His friends both keep their feet., while he takes a quick trip into the muddy waters.

OC: now what?

A few things to consider...

... the party is pretty healthy, except for the meat shield, I mean Web'r.

... Ivorium's soul is stuck in Father Benignus's body. He wants no more than to rejoin his "wife" and "daughters", but he needs a body, first.

... you have killed and looted the town's economy. At least the non-farming and fishing part.

... the Rat King's guild awaits you in the Port. You killed another of his men (Flich the Filcher). In more benevolent news, you set the husband and wife adventuring team of Cameron and Djeserit free. If you meet them again, they'll be friendly to you.

... where did you leave your horses? Did they survive the mosquito-bats?

"I have seen many spirits," Web's comments, "Some of them while awake. None so mighty as this one, though. Master Pogsley, what shall we do now? We should tell the people that we have killed the horrible bug spirits, and taken their noses as our rightful trophies. They will thank us, and then there will be feasts."

OOC: let's say they're tied up at the inn's stable ("The Sign of the Green Bride").

Ashura disappears into the grove of trees, which if they weren't sacred already, probably are now. The townsfolk slowly follow. They don't enter the grove. Rather they sit a dozen yards away and form a worship semi-circle.

Yaekob and the two well-dressed men take their argument to the trader's post across from the inn. Their men-at-arms stay outside. The sage, Beard, emerges from the Sign of the Green Bride, book and quill in hand.

From up high on the majestic walking chair, Pogsley snickers at the human falling in the water, then cringes. Pogsley fell into a bathtub once and it was awful. His aunts rubbed him all over with soap and kept pushing him underwater. It may have been a trap.

"Mmmm..." says Pogsley, nodding his head. "That really good idea!"

Pogsley slides down one of the walking chair's mechanical legs and holds up his arms triumphantly in front of the bewildered townspeople. "We beat up all big, bad, nasty bugs on that stinky island dat smell like gross, gross strawberries, and burn down the bugs' evil house!"

He bows.

"But even better!" declares Pogsley. "We go in the scary basement and set big nice bug free and now he our friend! You like it?"

OOC: nice.

With Benignus/Ivorium at the controls, the walking chair bestrides the lake like furniture of a giant (that got animated by a sorcerer's apprentice). It's mechanisms do a pretty good job keeping level, the chair platform never quite hits the surface. But sometimes the legs extend too far, shooting the chair a good 30 ft above the water.

gridley wrote:

It is a day for awesome sights in Green Bay: Ashura, the walking chair walking, a chatty, bourgeois goblin. A smaller crowd gathers around Pogsley, many of them children, more interested in the Dragonborn machine and the people who set fire to the house on the island than what amounts to outdoor church.

"It's great! We love the Green Bride even more now that's she's a monster! She loves us!" they shout all at once.

"She doesn't love me" says one shy, bright-eyed young human girl. "Are you going to burn our village down now?"

"Who cares if they do?" says a pig-eyed human boy. "Can I get a ride on the chair?" He's got a slingshot in his left hand.

A few of the adults thank you for doing something about the mosquito-bats. "They were quite the nuisance". Then they ask for rides in the chair, too.

gridley wrote:

OOC: nice again.

Beard the Sage looks you over carefully, his gaze lingering over the Dragonborn artifacts you recovered. You note he smells strongly of strawberries. "Oh most certainly. I'd love to hear all about your adventures in Ivorium's dungeon. Frankly, we thought you died like the rest."

The door of the trader's post slams open. The Mayor storms out. Two of the men-at-arms follow. They're heading to a large house near the lakeside.

"Then again, we might not have time. Some people --he hooks his nose towards the trader's post-- are going to be quite cross at you for, ahem, peeing in their honey pot. You might not want to linger."

As Beard finishes his polite warning, the whole grove scintillates in a way trees shouldn't. Half a dozen villagers scream and flee from the edge of the grove, their puzzled loved ones and neighbors calling for them to come back. One of them is Elmo the ranger. He's running towards the inn.

A faint smile crosses Beard's face.

(come to think of it, you all feel warm and fuzzy inside for a moment, too)

As you stand next to the walking chair chatting with the sage, more villagers come over to congratulate you for releasing the Green Bride, surviving Ivorium's fiendish traps, and clearing out the mosquito-bats. They look a tad... guilty when they mention the last bit. A feast in your honor is indeed mooted.

You note the villagers seem to just know the dragon-headed, tiny gazelle-legged, giant caterpillar is the Green Bride, and --most-- have no fear of it.

The bight-eyed little girl pipes up. "Mayor Yaekob won't go for a feast. He's a bad man. Rannos and Gremag are even badder. too. Are you sure you're not bad men" She squints hard at Web'r and Pogsley as she asks.

Web'r crouches down, to make himself shorter and therefore less threatening. This brings his face more clearly into view, however, so the results are decidedly mixed.

"We are good men," he explains earnestly, "The best men. We do very good things, and Master Pogsley is among the very wisest of men. He knows what good things are."

Web'r pauses, looking at the girl. "Would you like an evil bird-bug spirit nose? I have many, and surely they are good luck."

"Oh the bird-bugs aren't evil. They're just dumb beasts. But... thank you". She takes the proboscis being proffered.

"The bird-bugs aren't so bad if you remember to use the goop Master Beard makes to keep them away. But old Barnyard... I mean Barnard forgot to goop up his goats last month and they got sucked dry. It's good goop. Smells like strawber..."

"Hush now, girl!" spits Beard the Sage. "I'm sure these gentleman adventurers have better things to do with their time than listening you prattle on about... goat sucking".

More of the village elders join you and formally invite you all to stay for a feast.

We'br nods, clearly taking this seriously. Children are wise, in their way, when they are not eating dirt or setting small animals afire. "Tell me, then: are we good?"

Mallus wrote:

"I would be honored," We'br declares. With a feast in the offing, he doesn't even bother to look to Pogsley for guidance. Some things are universal laws, and may be safely inferred.

The girl looks at Benignus. "He's... okay. I think he might be lazy."

OOC: what's Web'r alignment? And Pogsley's?

Mallus wrote:

The villagers prepare a celebration feast. A few of the braver ones approach to congratulate you; cautiously slapping Web'r and Benignus on the back, pitching coins at Pogsley's feet. Many consider it bad luck to touch a goblin, lest some of their love of thieving, grime, or transmogrification rub off.

Mayor Yeakob doesn't take part in the preparations. Neither do the two traders. In fact, they and their help begin loading a wagon up. They look to be pulling up stakes.

At random intervals, the sacred grove swells with polychrome light. Most of the villagers react with awe, but a few seem unsettled by them. The traders look pained by the emittances.

Wow, thinks Pogsley, they really like my feet!

Pogsley happily stuffs the coins into his socks, so that he has a little walking around money, occasionally pulling one out to bite it before stuffing it back in.

OOC: Web'r is neutral. He dabbles in various alignments, but gets bored too quickly to commit to any of them long-term.

Web'r eats, drinks, and makes merry. His table manners will likely inspire cautionary tales that will frighten children for generations to come but it's clear that he's having a lovely time.

It's 5 GP worth of smaller coins.

gridley wrote:
"Pogsley want hear more about goat sucking. Which part have best flavor? Do goat get mad?"
She thinks for a moment. "I guess the blood tastes best. That's all the bird-bugs eat. And the goats don't get mad. They die."

She wanders away, following after collie whose ambling towards the townsfolk surrounding the grove. The tress light up again, leaving green afterimages in your eyes. You all feel a powerful sense of rightness, tinged with anticipation, as if you were seeing rainclouds on the horizon after a long drought. The little girl, however, stumbles and falls. She gets up and resumes chasing the dog.

Later, a big feast is served. Fresh fish, vegetables, grains, and a bit of goat. It's mostly excellent, except for the goat, which is dry. You notice about a quarter of the people abstain from eating meat.

Beer and mead flows freely. There's a splash of dandelion wine. One villager even breaks out their bottles of good Port wine (which is really terrible goblin wine).

OOC: how much do you drink?

Mayor Yaekob doesn't attend. Neither do the traders, Rannos and Gremag Brawley. They've piled their wagon high with the entire contents of their shop, and set guards around it. Periodically, Gremag, the shorter and brawnier of the two, comes out to check the wagon and leer at the festivities.

The grove continues to shoot out soothing radiance. Each time it does, a few villagers excuse themselves from the feast table. The little girl is one of them.

Emi and Yumi, the occasionally hat-dwelling miniature dryads make an appearance. "Thank you for helping us with our egg" they chirp in unison. "Now that's hatched, she will grow strong. She will watch over us. She will... make things right." "We can't repay you now. But come back... soon. We'll..." They stop to confer in a fae dialect close enough to Elven that Benignus can understand it.

<We could pay them now by allowing them to become servants of Ashura! If they don't want, you could change their minds.>
<It would be an honor!>
<Do you think it comes off as cheap?>
<It might. They don't like honor. They like things.>
<Good point!>

"You already carry the Staff of of the Aspect of Ashura Which Heals. But can see it's power is fading. Come back and we'll restore all it's energies.". Bowing, the return to the grove. As the miniature dryads leave, the feast begins to wind down.

OOC: where are you spending the night?

As prepare to retire, the little girl approaches, apparently after sneaking out of her house. "Umm, hi. Oh, how rude, I never told you my... I'm Lee. It's short for Homily. Can you take me with you when you leave. I can't stay here anymore."

If none of the villagers offer Web'r a place, he'll stick with Pogsley. Or, if it comes to it, he'll stagger off into the woods, dig a shallow pit, and sleep in that. Like the old days, when you couldn't find a proper cave.

Web'r nods, sagely, barely managing to maintain his balance as he does. "Of course not. You have seen the wider world, and experienced the wisdom of Master Pogsley. This place must seem terrible small now."

He thinks for a moment. "Have the blade spirits spoken to you? Do you wish to be my acolyte? I would very much like an acolyte."

OOC: okay, so moderately intoxicated. Until morning, Web'r is at +4 HP, +2 to saves (because the gods watch over children and drunks), -1 to hit, -3 INT, -4 WIS. -1 CHA. I thought there was a chart for this!

If a room is offered, Web'r will indeed lurch off in that general direction. After first assuring himself that Homily will be safe the night; if she seems worried, she can have the room and he'll find that ditch.

Homily takes the dagger gingerly at first, holding it away from her body with both hands. Then her big eyes light up and she does a little girl's approximation of a zweihander stance. "I want to stab bad things!"

The innkeeper, Eli, gives you the two large rooms at the far end of the common room. Homily does seem worried, if not exactly afraid, and she doesn't want to leave Web'r side. "I can sleep on the floor". She clutches her new dagger like a razor-edged doll.
