In Pursuit of the Rat King Empty
PostSubject: In Pursuit of the Rat King   In Pursuit of the Rat King Icon_minitimeTue Jan 03, 2012 11:03 am

After a tearful --and slightly poison spittle-ful-- reunion with the unharmed Mrs. Funicular at her empty and partially-burnt boarding house, the now homeless agency of Pogsley and Sons must make a few crucial decisions.

Where to go?

OOC: I believe the plan was to split up, with each PC going to their "safe place"; Pogsley into the Goblin Pit, Web'r to his guild, and Benignus to his temple (stashing the walking chair there). Oh, and Nameless to his old master's tower, I suppose...

... then again, there's something to be said about sticking together... oh, and I Homily is going with Web'r.

What to do with your new prisoner? (the human female lieutenant of the RK named Hulda Scrumm)

OOC: As happy as Mrs. F. is to see Pogsley, she won't risk angering the Rat King further by letting you bring your prisoner into the boarding house. She made it clear the RK spread a lot of gold around the bar next door, and it's certain someone there is watching.

How quickly to fence your treasures (Pogsley got mediocre prices his first attempt) and when to start training?

Now that you know the RK is looking for you, how are you going to look for him?

What to do with your old prisoner? (the half-orc assassin named Gremag Davi).

OOC: there was talk of a deal to free him in exchange for assassinating the RK's deep gnome, Rumperdinck the Slit-kin).

How do get in touch with your employer, Dahlia Dash? Previously, she contacted Pogsley at the bar.

OOC: did I miss anything? Anyway... feel free to post answers and more questions!

OOC: Web'r will keep Homily with him, and keep a watchful eye upon her at all times. I was struck with a terrible thought of her acting a his sword-caddy, with a bag slung over her shoulder...but sanity prevailed, barely.

Web'r will go to the guild, with the intent of getting some training and introducing Homily, UNLESS Master Pogsley asks him to stick around and play bodyguard. If that's the case, he'll stand close and look threatening.

Homily is amazed by the Port; its towers, its misshapen streets and accidental alleys, the throngs of... beings rejoicing in their fallen state. She's also particularly taken with Aster taffy.

Most Port residents earn no more than a scowl from Homily. However some make her curl her little fists in anger or cause her face to slacken beatifically. She tries to follow those folks.

OOC: do you equip her like an adventurer? She has the magic dagger from the dungeon, right? Armed children are common in the Port -- but do you get her armor, too? Leather would be relatively easy -- but a child-sized-and-weight suit of chain or plate would take time and money. Or a quest...

OOC: Yes to the dagger, and leather armor? Certainly, if she's willing to wear it. And Web'r will make a point of taking her through some of the temple areas, to see if there's any that call to her.

Web'r has Homily outfitted with a stiff leather coat and matching boots; enough to protect her from light blades and prevent her from cutting her feet on the sharp pieces of broken dreams that pave the Port's streets. Keeping an eye for the Rat King's minions --at least the ones he's seen-- he hustles the girl from one temple to another.

They find neither attackers nor a higher calling.

To the Guildhall, then, post haste. Web'r will swing in as posted before, this time with Homily clinging to his back. This will doubtless take some persuading.

Homily all but vaults onto Web'r's broad, heavily armored back, shouting "Piggeee baaaack ride!"

Apparently, shes like piggy back rides.

Thus the caveman and young scion of goodness made their way to Bug End, the narrow street right off the docks which was home to the Bellicose Fellows guild hall. The various half-shuttered, abandoned, and burnt establishments they passed had seen better and gayer days; Jack Nance's Emporium, the Belle of the Balls, Just Cravats, the Tiger in the Tail. Every shop a seemingly a place out of time whose time is up, save the dapper fighter's hall, itself once an inn and adjoining theater called the Laced Peacock.

Inside it was all brandy and braggadocio; the boasts of aging, deadly, fancy men. An elf dressed in Unseelie Court dueling pajamas greets Web'r warmly --for an elf-- "Ah it is Beastly's young slope-headed protege. I am sorry, he is gone. Negotiations with the... orcs. You are ready for more instruction so soon? Quelle surprise. You have more yellow rocks, no?". His name is John Elan. No one greets Homily with more than a raised eyebrow.

Elan informs Web'r of the following: training will now cost him 1250 GP, it is possible to switch specializations, which requires unlearning his sabre technique via something called "Lord Queenbury's Punch", which is combination of potent, potable elixirs and a sequence of precise blows to the head, said special training will cost an additional 500 gold stones, and it will take at least one month's time, as both the elixir and head blows need to administers carefully, "lest permanent injury be done to the brain".

Also, he says things are looking dicey with regards to the Shark League. "The city guard is quitting in droves, thanks to the Guv executing every guard without a bull's head for a head. The demobbed are taking up with the gangs -- and the Shark Lads aren't picky. None of them meet our exacting standards."

As Web'r soaks up the current gossip and Homily squints disapprovingly at the members of the Bellicose Fellows 101, a performer with a lute enters from a back room. She looks exceedingly guilty. Distracted. Nevertheless she begins playing a haunting melancholy tune.

Who doesn't?

"I am used to being struck in the head," Web'r says solemnly. "I have found it to be very educational in the past. I assume that I did, at least. And I will certainly have sufficient rocks very soon, since Master Poglsey is on the job. He is very clever."

OOC: Sounds perfect, assuming it can be afforded. Which we will have to see, pending the sale of the Goods.

Web'r looks about for the dancing monkey which generally accompanies music in the Port, and is deeply disappointed when none appear to be in the offing.

OOC: I should also mention the soul of Ivorium had a suggestion when the subject of reforging the sword came up: "When I needed metalworking of a... supernatural nature done, I contracted with a Port... entity, name of Bazolo. Works out of tower called the Stinking Spar. He does good work. Fast. But detail-oriented. Which shouldn't surprise. He's a devil.

He should still be around, being immortal. Unless he was smote or driven back to the Hells."

Tonight's bill is unfortunately monkey-free. However, during the sad lute performance, Len Magnificent, a Bellicose Fellow in exemplary standing, comes in with the evenings hot gossip; the Order of the Iron Duke, a cult devoted to the deified warlord who controlled the Port before the Guv and his Gang of Four deposed him, is staging one of their secret rituals on the banks of the River Livia.

Much belittlement is made of the Order's odd practices; fearlessness, the commingling of valor and mercy, and abstinence from the pleasures of the flesh.

Homily's ears perk up, despite not understanding the bigger words.

"Tonight" says Lenny Mags, as he's known to his intimates, "they dine on the flesh of a purple worm".

Likely even pricier work...but well worth considering.

Len Magnificent chortles in between sips of apple brandy. "I wasn't speaking euphemistically, my fine, ferociously browed friend. During their initiation ceremony they eat the flesh of a Western Plains Worm. Average specimen fifty feet long if they're an inch. Bright purple in color. Dyspeptic in temperament, when alive."

"Oh. Of course." Web'r removes his hands from Homily's ears, and offers a humble apology.

Homily gives Web'r a cross look. "I am not a baby and I am not afraid of monsters."

Quote :
"Would you like to meet these people, child?"
She considers the offer for a moment. "Yes. I should seek... fellowship with good people who fight monsters. And eat them. I guess." She pronounces the word "fellowship" with a hesitant reverence that suggests a passing angel deposited the word in her brain.

As Web'r says his farewells, cries of "When's the monkey coming on!" and "We want Mr. Chim!" drown out the sombre lute music. The musician packs it in; her sad and beautiful songs are no match for a room full of brandied men with monkey on the brain.

The three of you leave at the same time. Outside, the streets are haphazard and empty. The moon enormous. The silver lake often visible on it's surface is nowhere to be seen. "Now that's an omen for you" says the musician. "Oh well, better the monster you know."

She closes her eyes and begins to walk away.

Meanwhile, Pogsley drags Gremag and Ms. Scrumm down into the Pit with him. He tells Gremag that they have a deal, one assassination in exchange for his freedom, but that first they need to get some information on the people they're after.

Fearing that his aunties will try to filch his prisoners, he has Gremag book them a cheap room in a sleazy Goblin sex hotel where a bit of screaming won't arouse much attention. Once inside, he ties Ms. Scrumm down to the foul-smelling bed and slowly begins setting up his bird electrocuter. Finding the woman distinctly lacking in electrocutable external gentialia, Pogsley scratches his head for a minute. He looks to Gremag.

"Where her fliggles? Where her poonbanana?"

He considers asking her if she has suffered some terrible zipper accident, but finally decides that humans are just lacking in certain basic goblin anatomy and laments how lame their sex lives must be. Finally inspiration strikes and he strips off one of her shoes and pulls the bird electrocuter onto the naked foot.

"That look like a real sneaky foot," whispers Pogsley into her ear, flecks of his foul-smelling saliva coating her face. "It be real shame if you not be able to sneak around on it no more, so maybe you talk to Pogsley, eh?"

He gives her a taste of electricity, just until she winces in pain, then launches into a series of questions:

"Tell me 'bout Rat King. Where he sleep? Where he go for fun? Who guard him?"

If she resists, Pogsley zaps her again, increasing the voltage a little. If she co-operates, he continues with more questions:

"How many people work for Rat King? Who are dey? And what you know about Rumpleddickslitskin? Where he hang out?"

Hulda Scrumm keeps her composure, for now, despite being tied down to a piss-and-worse stained bed with a foot connected to a bird electrocutor. "Let me tell you about the Rat King. Web'r looks to Homily, and crooks a thumb in the minstrel's direction while simultaneously raising an inquiring eyebrow. The mental stress of coordinating so many gestures at once leaves him a bit dizzy, but he's already come to trust the girl's judgement of others.

OOC: on second thought, no need to draw this out....

When Detective Pogsley turns up the juice, Scrumm becomes more talkative.

"Stop it, stop it, I'll talk. The Rat King's a wererat. He lives in a palace in the sewers. Somewhere in the Ghetto Terata. Never been there, myself." Her voice goes from panicked to resentful for a second. "I hear there's a back way in near the Scorned Stone. Not sure about guards - I think he usually keeps Potsticker and Mordecai close, 'cause they know how to handle battle swords and longbows."

"He likes elf music. And games. Try The Hunting Bride down in Gudrun's Muzzle. They always got a Large Chess game going in the back. Or The Belle and the Bone in the Blastcastle. They play elf music. Loud."

Scrumm starts to sweat profusely. It improves the air quality in the room.

"There are 12 of us, no wait, 11. Keln got killed by a poison dart in your boarding house.

You got got the elves; Kismet, Paisley, Eleanor, and Mordecai. Each one of them flighty, quick, and quiet. Then the elf half-breed, Potsticker. Then the real people; Kelzie, Pengaz, me, and the Brain. They says he's touched, but think it's just the drugs. Then you got the King's top lieutenant, Rumperdinck the Pit Gnome. I seen her summon up a stone monster 30 ft. tall. Destroyed a whole block. Just 'cause someone called her a redcap. It's weird, usually a gnome will only listen to an elf, if then, being rotten back-biting biters to the core. The King must have something powerful over her.

Finally there's the Rat King himself. Short, pudgy, ugly as sin. Impossible to kill unless you armed with sterling or magic.

As for Rumperdinck? She walks up and down the Port. Always underfoot, with a knife, we like to say. I've seen her at the Belle and Bride, oh, also at the White Claw. Right on the edge of the Slum of Monsters. Went there once. Saw a big man with a roaches' head sup on the eyes of a Sad Sallie. Didn't go back."

Thanks to Web'r use of the exaggerated subtlety common to children, Homily understands perfectly, "She's okay. Wait, there's something bad out there. Two somethings."

No one is surprised when two wolves slink of an alley and approach the minstrel. One is large, the other small. "Hello my darling" says the large wolf. "Are you ready to join your pack?"

"I don't have a pack. I have a family. You monster." She pulls a silver knife. A cheese knife. Likely nicked from one of the Bellicose Fellows serving sets.

"No!" says the smaller wolf in a high-pitched voice. Both wolves leap.

From the eaves of a roof nearby, a strangely accented voice remarks, "Holy shit! Talking wolves." It seems to come from a very large, long-haired cat.

OOC: roll init.
